1981 Nedeburg Edelrood for only R13.
Yes, it’s true! I came across a bottle of Nedeburg Edelrood which cost only R13.25 – you can still see the original price tag. In fact, it was given to me, so it cost me nothing! Thanks Nora for giving us the bottle of Nedeburg.
It had been left open for quite a few months, but it still really tasted fine – not just for a wine that had been left open, but also for bottle of wine from 1981.
We all thought that the wine would be vinegar and would have to be thrown away, but it was really fine, a bit old and musty, but still a sound wine.
Nora, we enjoy the wine – and I hope that there’s plenty more coming!
ps: I wonder when the line was originally bought to only cost R13.25. Does anybody have any idea?

I doubt whether it was bought in the early eighties – R13.25 was an absolute fortune then… Perhaps around the late eighties, early nineties? When I still lived in Joh’burg, late nineties, I used to go to this dingy Checkers in Rivonia and pick up the most amazing dusty bottles for yesteryear’s prices, as nobody was buying them and they would just lie there year in, year out. Oh, yes, those were the days… hmmmm…
