Day 87: Road closed (but not for me)

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

Day 87: Road closed (but not for me), originally uploaded by Craig is shooting.

Tomorrow many of the major roads in and around will be closed for the cycle tour. This sign is just before my house, with 88km still to go!

The best part of the race is that it is one day that cyclists own the road (all 35000 of us riding tomorrow). The total distance is about 109km, so please think of good weather, no wind and fast hills.

Day 86: Winetasting

Day 86: Winetasting, originally uploaded by Craig is shooting.

One of my favourite wine shops was having a wine-tasting and a huge sale today. So we went along to stock up on wine.

As you can see in the picture, many of the wines are unlabeled, or with just basic labeling. This is not because of quality, they are all suburb wines, but often end of runs or left over export wines.

Having made wine on one of our wine farms, I can assure you that often the farms have to literally dump wine to make space for new bottling, and they will sell them for anything to get rid of them. But they don’t want their own labels on it because it undercuts the retail value of the wine.

You can check them out yourself if you like – www.getwine.co.za. I have often ordered online from them, and they are fast with their delivery. I have never had a bad wine from them.

Day 85: Cycle tour expo

Day 85: Cycle tour expo, originally uploaded by Craig is shooting.

The Argus cycle tour is in three days, and today I had to go to the expo to collect my number and start card. It was quite exciting to be around so much cool cycling stuff, and to feel the energy of the fellow cyclists just before the race.

The race, which is just over 109km, attracts approx 35000 cyclists. I believe that it is the largest timed sporting event in the world, but I cannot confirm that.

Looking forward to Sunday.

Day 81: Needing energy

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Day 81: Needing energy, originally uploaded by Craig is shooting.

In exactly one week (day 88), I will be cycling the Argus cycle tour, a
bicycle race of 109km (about 68 miles), around Cape Town. I will be needing
some extra energy for the hills.

Day 80: South African Navy Day

South African Navy Day, originally uploaded by Craig is shooting.

South African Navy day is today, and it is a rare opportunity to be able to visit a Naval facility and to take photos of Naval ships (both South African and German).

You can go here to see the rest of the photos.
