Fauna

The visiting toad

We were having supper at a friends house the other day, and a Leopard Toad come wondering through their garden door, straight past Eccles, Lois’ guide dog. This litter fellow had not a care in the world, and Eccles was so surprised that she just sat there and watched.

The toad simply hopped inside, hopped around the lounge and kitchen for a few minutes, and then without even a goodbye, hopped back into the garden.

I believe that this guy is a regular visitor, and is often found sitting in their cats water bowl, much to the surprise of the poor cat!.
The Leopard Toad is native to Cape Town, and is often found in our gardens, especially when they breed in August. We find them in our garden quite often.

BTW: These guys even have their own website, where you can find out all about them.

Mr Grumpy

This fish was spotted in the Kelp Forest exhibit at the Cape Town Aquarium. I don’t know what type of fish he is, but he really looks grumpy (or maybe just a little serious).

Diving at the Cape Town Aquarium

Ragged Tooth Shark

Today, my brother and his wife arranged to go scuba diving in the shark tank at Cape Town Aquarium. I don’t have a scuba certificate, so I was unable to dive, but I went along with my camera, and I managed to get a couple of nice shots in. If you have some free time, pop down to the Aquarium, the exhibits are remarkable, and they have a fantastic selection of marine life, and plenty of activities for both little and big people.

By the way, even though the sharks look (and are) very scary, last year only 9 people worldwide got killed by sharks.

Warning, we got there at 9am and it was empty. But by 10:30am, the queue was outside the door and around the corner, so best you get there early. Full details and costs etc are here.

Constantia Vineyards

The vineyards in Constantia are looking beautiful at the moment; the landscape is green as far as the eye can see. This is not really surprising considering that the earliest of the grapes will be harvested in less than two months.

Constantia is the oldest wine region in South Africa, and this particular vineyard is on Klein Constantia, home of the famous Vin de Constance, the wine of Charles Dickens, Jane Austen and Napoleon Bonaparte.

It is a privilege to live in Cape Town; it takes me two minutes to get to the beach, and 10 minutes in the opposite direction to be tasting wine in Constantia.  So grocery shopping this morning, followed by a quick winetasting. A very civilised Saturday.

Brighton Pier

Hi Guys

I am back from my trip, and I have started to process my photos, so watch here for pics of my trip over the next few days.

We start with Brighton…

Brighton Pier can only be described as a little tacky. It has huge potential, but I get the feeling that there is no great effort put into it.

It is filled with ice-cream shops and penny slot machines, as well as a few restaurants that don’t look particularity exciting.

It is the kind of place that you visit and cross off your list of places to go to.

Having said all that, Brighton itself is a wonderful place and well worth visiting, I will be posting some pics of the village shortly.

Seagull on Brighton Pier

One of the many seagulls found in Brighton. These are the beach version of a rooster, waking you up really early in the morning,
