Day 167: Wild Mushrooms
Day 167: Wild Mushrooms, originally uploaded by Craig is shooting.
I was very excited to find my local Woolworths store selling packs of mixed wild mushrooms. A packed immediately went into my basked. And of course, Lois does not eat mushrooms, which meant that I could eat them all myself :-)
I stir-fried them in a little butter, with fresh garlic and some herbs. Really yummy!
Note: Woolworths in South Africa is not to be confused with Woolworths in U.K., our Woolworths is affiliated to Marks and Spenser.
Here is a pic of the stir-fry in progress.
Day 165: Chocolate Spring Rolls
Day 165: Chocolate Spring Rolls, originally uploaded by Craig is shooting.
I had these chocolate spring rolls for dessert at our local Thai Restaurant, Simply Asia in Lakeside.
I was quite happy with my meal until I overheard the waitress mention to the next table that they had chocolate spring rolls for dessert, and that was me lost. I simply had to try them, and yes, they are as decadent as they look.
The pastry is crispy, and the melted chocolate just pours out when you take a bite. You get six on a plate, but we split them (even Lois had some!), and trust me, three is plenty!
Highly recommended!
Strawberry Cheesecake

I just couldn’t resist taking this picture of my dessert. Strawberry cheesecake served in a martini glass. It was really yummy!
If you want some, you will have to visit the Port Elizabeth Golf Club, where I attend the Algoa Toastmasters 50th birthday celebration function.
Day 143: Fresh Salad

A fresh garden salad for supper, including tomatoe, onion, rocket, feta, sugar-snap peas, lettuce, tenderstem, and avo. Yummy!
The Annex restaurant (and day 140: steak)
The Annex restaurant, originally uploaded by Craig is shooting.
The Annex is a lovely little restaurant that I was taken to the other night. We went there for a friend’s birthday. It is tucked away behind the Kalk Bay bookshop. In fact, it is owned by the same folks that own the bookshop.
They have a very small menu, however everything is freshly prepared and there is something for everybody. Eric had pork belly, and the little sample that I had was tasty but very rich.
Lois had the daily special, which was a butternet and chilli soup, which she said was very good. The restaurant selects a different recipe book each month, and everyday the special is selected from it.
I had the yellowtail, fresh from the harbour (about 200m away from the restaurant), it was served on a bed of baby potatoes and veges. Tender, firm and tasty.
Anja had a rare sirloin steak, served with mash and freshly stir-fried vegetable.
Staff are great, the winelist is good, and food terrific. From where I was sitting, you get a clear view of the kitchen, and the chef’s clearly know what they are doing.
Prices while not cheap, are pretty competitive, and considering that everything is fresh, I think that it is pretty good value.
I’ll be back!
