Kalk Bay
On Saturday night we had supper in Fish Hoek, the sleepy community just south of where I live. In Cape Town they say that if you travel North you cross the “Boerewors curtain”, literally the Sausage Curtain when you hit the northern suburbs, and the “Lentil Curtain” when you go South.
This is almost impossible to explain without offending somebody, but the best I can do is to say that it is a reference to the traditional meat-eating Afrikaans population in the North, and the tree-hugging vegetarians in the South. Ok, I did warn you it is impossible to explain, but living in Lakeside probably makes me a meat-eating tree hugger.
Anyway, if you drive along Boyes Drive, a short and picturesque mountain road from Lakeside to Kalk Bay, you get some amazing views of False Bay. This shot is (yet another) of Kalk Bay Harbour, literally on the border of the Lentil Curtain. The harbour has some lovely restaurants, and is still home to traditional fishing. You can still buy fresh fish straight off the boats on most mornings.
On time
To my utter surprise, the re-tarring of Main Road is complete, and on time as well! Considering that the section between Muizenberg and Kalk Bay is about 2 years behind schedule, I never thought that they would manage to complete the section in Lakeside in the promised two weeks, but somehow they did. Well done to the contractors.
For my last post, I posted the other end of this strange-looking machine, well here is (I think) the front, or possibly the back. It is a little difficult to tell. But what seems to happen is that it drives over the tar and rips it up, and then convey’s it along the conveyor belt at the back to drop into a nearby truck.
It’s a little scary seeing these guys in action, and to think about a machine that is powerful enough to just rip apart a road like a piece of jelly, but that is basically what this guy does. A great deal of respect please.
Road stripper
I am not quite sure what this machine is used for, but I think that it is to strip old roads before a fresh layer of tar is added, but is just a guess. I do however know that this machine has something to do with roads, it (and its friends) has been driving up and down Main Road for the last few days, resurfacing the road.
And for the first time in history, this crew are working quickly. They are over half way, and the road looks set to be freshly tarred well within the promised two weeks.
Old Truck
This is the last of the shots from the recent Classic car expo (unless I find anymore that I have missed). I love the classic feel to this old truck, complete with wooden spokes and the wishbone suspension. If you scratched around in the bed of the truck, you could find all manner of interesting things, including old car radios, speedometers, wires and random tools.
The truck is still licensed and in running order, I am glad that somebody is looking after it.
Christine
Two more of the classic cars, these old beauties remind me of the evil car in Stephen King’s novel Christine – the car that killed people.
