Argus cycle tour 2008 – movie
I didn’t get to ride the Argus this year, but I did manage to take a few photos on the route, and at the finish line. Most of them are of my team – Team Whiff – who raise funds for physically and mentally disabled people.
The video below was taken on Lakeside Main Road. This is just a few of the 35000 cyclists than cycled past. If you listed to the audio, it sounds like a swarm of bees. Looks a bit like a flash mob, doesn’t it?
Not riding on Sunday
Isn’t it strange that about the only person that will let me ride in the Argus Cycle Tour on Sunday is my doctor?
Nobody else will let me: my pharmacist, physio, friends, family, clients and colleagues. So, while I am really going to miss it – not this year. I will get my back sorted out completely, and then start my training again. I should be taking my bike out in the next couple of weeks.
However, I will still be supporting Team Whiff – the trust that I usually cycle for. I will be cheering everybody as they fly past me on Lakeside Main Road, and then see team at the finish line!
I will be arranging our annual fund-raising due shortly – there might be a helicopter flight in the lucky draw, so watch this space! But in the mean time, you can still make an online donation to the trust.
Good luck to everybody cycling!
Do something new every day
They say that you should do something new every day, and today I am going to do so in style!
I am off to Knysna to be an auctioneer – which I have never done – for the John Whiffen Trust, raising funds to provide communication and leadership skills to physically and mentally disabled people.
I have never been an auctioneer before, so I am a bit nervous. Unfortunately, there is not a Toastmasters manual "When you are the auctioneer" – TI here is a new manual for you!\
I will let you know how it goes!
Team Whiff – R5600 – thanks!
Well, as many of you know by now, every year I ride the Argus Cycle Tour to raise funds for the John Whiffen Trust. This year was no exception, and yes, this year I finished my third Argus. So my time was 4 minutes slower than last year, but hey, I finished!
But more important than my finishing the Argus is the fund-raising for the trust. I have just finished getting in the final figures, and Lois and I raised just over R5600 for the trust, which I am thrilled about!
So, to all of you that generously made donations for the fund raising dinner, both by being there, and by donating prizes, thanks a ton – without you we would not have been able to do this.
The John Whiffen Trust provides funds to allow for physically and mentally disabled people to get communication and leadership training. If you want to find out more about the trust, or about the people that it supports, please visit their web site.
See you on the road next year.
PS: This includes a last minutes cross-channel donation of 10 pounds (R140) put into the box from me on behalf of Stephen, and in return he is putting 10 pounds into his box on my behalf!
FYI: He is running the London marathon to raise funds for cancer research. If you want to help out – here is the link.
Argus Cycle Tour – its tomorrow!
There is excitement in the Cape Town air as over 20000 cyclists have been arriving this week; to join the approx 15000 local cyclists riding the 109km around Cape Town in the 30th annual Argus Cycle Tour.
You can’t go anywhere without seeing bicycles, hearing people talking about bicycles, or even being on a bicycle from time to time.
Tomorrow, I will be joining about 35000 people on the tour – the largest timed event in the world!
Yesterday, I collected Lois from the airport, and it was busy (I believe the busiest weekend at the airport!), and as I waited, you could see the cyclists come past security. There is somebody with a bicycle pump sticking out of his backpack, there is somebody else in a suit carrying a laptop, but with a bicycle helmet clipped to the handle of his laptop bag, and there is somebody with a paddle.
What? A paddle, this is Argus Weekend, not the Brede River Canoe race. I know that it rained at last year’s Argus, but come on, it was not that wet!
My bike is ready, my gear is ready, and I collect my new clothing for the race last night. I have been getting steadily more and more excited this weekend – I don’t know how I am going to sleep tonight!
I am riding for the John Whiffen Trust, raising funds to support both physically and mentally disabled people to gain communication and leadership skills through the Toastmasters programme. This year, I have already raised over R4500, and I am still looking for more donations, so please dig deep! Thanks to everyone that has already donated.
Think of me and my fellow riders when you are sleeping late tomorrow, or lazily reading the Sunday paper, while I will be climbing up Suikerbossie – the dreaded hill just before the end.
