Las Vegas

Things to so when in Vegas…

What to do when in Vegas? Well, basically anything. Here is a small selection of the more unusual distractions; all taken in a shopping mall within about 100m of each other.

Buy a chicken suit

Eat hot chilli sauce

Get tattoos done in a shopping mall

Goto a strip club. Ok, I suppose this one is not that unusual in Vegas, but in a shopping mall?

Bally’s Hotel

It is really hot in Vegas at the moment, about 35 degrees or so. So while it might look lazy to use these moving travellators, it simply gets far too hot in the heat of Vegas to walk around everywhere. So you find yourself taking every shortcut possible to remain a little cooler, such as using the covered walkways and taking shortcuts through the hotels.

And the next trip is to…

…Las vegas. All flights and hotels are booked, passports are up to date and conference booked. So next month we are on our way!

Here is a small teaser from our previous trip.

Looking down the strip. On the left is the “Brooklyn Bridge”, and Paris and the Eiffel Tower on the right. The next shot is from the top of the tower.

Looking down the strip from the top of “the Eiffel Tower”. On the right is New York New York, with Excalubur and the Luxor in the behind it, and Mandalay Bay (the gold building) behind it.

Live music on the strip.

The Strip at night; Madame Tussauds on the left and the Venetian on the right, complete with the Rialto Bridge and St Marks Square.

No unauthorized weddings on the Tower!

TicketI was cleaning up my study, and I found the old ticket stubs from our trip up the Eiffel Tower in Vegas. Ok, so this wasn’t the real tower in France, it was only a 1/2 scale model, but it was still 540 feet (164m) tall, and it was pretty impressive.

Walking through the Paris hotel is really like walking through the streets of Paris – complete with sidewalk cafe’s, accordion music & cobbled streets. I really felt like I was back in Paris.

However, what really amused me was the warning on the ticket  – “no unauthorized weddings”.  Where else would you find that warning? I suppose that if you are going to do a Vegas wedding, the top of the Eiffel Tower is as good a place as any  – good thing Lois and I are already married!

I still think that Vegas is a great place to get married – you can have a drive trough wedding, the reception at the MacDonalds drive through, and even see a show afterwards!

Don’t forget – no unauthorized weddings!

The Blue Man Group

Bluemangrouparmspaintmed_2

Last night I went to see the Blue Man Group. Now this is probably the most impossible show to describe.

The show consists of three men on stage, dressed in black, bald with blue hands and faces. They have a full rock band backing them, complete with kit & two percussionists. I believe that they also use a Chapman Stick bass.

The show itself is a mixture of sound, light, art and comedy. They use bizarre musical instruments, such as trombones made out of PVC pipe, and home made percussive xylophones. They perform many experiments using paint, such as pouring luminous paint onto the drum skins while playing, and watching the paint fly all over the place. The coordination of lighting and sound is an absolute visual spectacle.

By my description it must sound a bit strange, but it was the most incredible show that I have ever seen – I really would love to see them again!

It was so good that I came home with a DVD of a concert, as well as a CD of some of the tracks they perform.

Thanks Rory and Lynne for suggesting that I go, and if you ever get an opportunity to see them – go!

You can find out more on their website – www.blueman.com
