Running on the beach at sunrise (pic from Energy Events)
Wednesday was the second Muizenberg Monster Beach Run – a 20k “there and back again” dash starting on Muizenberg beach. Only about 45 or so peopled entered, and I ran it in 2:01, with a very respectable position of 22nd. But it was tough running on the beach – even though most of the sand is hard, there are still soft spots, and you are always running on a slight camber.

My trail shoes were so full of sand by the end that I had to wash them with the hose-pipe afterwards. But it was amazing running on the beach as the sun slowly rose, and the sky went from almost black, to a golden yellow sunrise, and then into the day.
I will be back next year!
One of the water crossings
You may have noticed the mile markers along Main Road in the deep south. There is one at the corner of Main/Steenberg road, another opposite the Old Bakery, and one in St James. Here is the original Lakeside marker.
According to the Muizenberg Historical Conservation Society, the original stones date back to around 1810. You may have also noticed (I didn’t) that there were two gaps in the sequence. Muizenberg and (I think) Kalk Bay.
Thanks to the Kalk Bay and St James Historical Society (and some cash from the City roads department), the gaps have been filled with brand new replica stones. This one is by the BP petrol station in Muizenberg. I have not managed to find the other new stone yet, but I will post a pic as soon as I do!
There is a lovely long and windy road from Gordon’s Bay to Betty’s Bay, and if you feel like an afternoon drive this is a lovely route for it. There are plenty of stopping and picnic points on the side of the road where you can stop to admire the view. But be warned, on holidays it can get very busy.

There is a lovely outdoor photography exhibition that has suddenly appeared on the walkway between Muizenberg and St James. The first section is just past Bailey’s cottage, and the second at St James beach. I came across it completely by chance while out on a training run last night.
The purpose of the exhibition is to raise awareness of conservation in the False Bay area.
Cape Town has been on fire since Sunday. Currently over 4000 ha of bush has been destroyed, and the fire is still not under control. To make it more difficult, yesterday was the hottest day in Cape Town for 100 years. At least today the cooler weather should help a little.
Last night we had another flare-up on Boyes Drive. Literally in the span of about 10 minutes the mountain went from dark to a flaming inferno. These pics were all taken yesterday afternoon and last night at and around my house.

Two pics of the Muizenberg beach houses; shot on 35mm film. Yeah I know that everybody loves to shoot these houses, but they still make for a great subject.
I shot this about 2 weeks ago at the Bluebird Garage Market, which is held every Friday evening. While it is not close to the great European markets it’s nice to pop down for a drink or two, have some interesting food. Having said that, there is usually live music and craft beer, so it is worth popping down one Friday evening.
