There is a sailing regatta on at Zandvlei this weekend, and all the small boats are out. Of course I was there to capture it.

Cape Town

We are having a lovely sunny break in the middle of a very wet winter, but some of us are looking a little like dinosaurs; especially this tree.

Enjoy the sunrise.

They have just painted the fence at the picnic area in Zandvlei. I love the bright colours. What do you think?

Cloudy sunrise

Yeah I know. Another sunrise, but they are just so great at the moment. I really love the clouds in this one, which I why I have posted it. Hope you enjoy it!

Sunrise in Lakeside

At this time of the year, the sun rises and sets with the most amazing colours in the sky. And the few clouds in the sky today make for the most amazing sunrise shots. This particular show was a panorama of 2 shots taken on my compact, caught on the way to work.

I just think that Cape Town is the most amazing place to live, with views like this literally 100m from my front door.

Walking in the Mist

Walking in the mist; we are having a lot of misty mornings as summer reluctantly gives way to winter.

Misty Morning

Cape Town

I spotted these early morning paddlers while driving to work, so I grabbed my phone and took the shot. I like the way the duck appears to be watching the paddlers.

Cape Town South Africa Travel

We have mountain fires in Cape Town every summer. Usually they happen when it is hot and windy, and mostly they are started by cigarette butts being thrown out of car windows.

Mountain on fire

This year is no exception. On Saturday the mountain just above Boyes Drive was on fire, and the fire-crews were using two helicopters to dump water onto the fire. Because it was so close to my house and I live right next to the vlei, I watched the choppers collecting the water out of the lake before dumping it onto the fire.

Choppers collecting water

It was pretty amazing watching the choppers, incredible skill in dropping down to grab the water, and then dumping it right on the hot-spots. This is in the cross-winds and flying through all the smoke. These are amazing pilots.

Dropping water on the fire

Thankfully, they managed to put this one out quite quickly, and there didn’t seem to be any major damage. We have had some pretty major fires in the past.

Cape Town News South Africa

These guys were with one of the bands playing at the Kite Festival. Like typical musicians (I know because I am one), they had no idea what time they were playing. So while I didn’t get to watch them play, they were quite happy to do an impromptu photo shoot.

I am totally baffled as to where they got their hats from, they were totally unique and artistic. Any ideas?

Rainbow Kite

Today is the Cape Town International Kite Festival in Lakeside. I shot through this morning to take a few shots. There are some amazing kites on display, from simple kites you can fly in your back garden, to huge cartoon characters. Entrance is only R15, and proceeds go to Cape Mental Health.

The festival finishes tonight at 7pm, so there is still plenty of time to get down there and have a look at the kites. It is a great outing for children, and small kites are for sale for the little people to fly themselves.

Even the SA flag was (literally) flying
