I had a business function at the Silo hotel in the V&A waterfront. But I had no idea it was going to be in the Penthouse. It was a magnificent venue. The view from the top was just amazing.
I could quite happily book a few nights here, but at a list price of over USD 6000 per night, I don’t think I’ll be making a booking. But it truly is a lovely venue.
A trip to the V&A waterfront is not complete without a trip on the Cape Wheel. The ferris wheel was installed in 2010 as a temporary attraction for the 2010 football world cup. 19 years on and it’s still in use.
A trip takes about 40 minutes, and you have a fantastic view of the harbour, the city and the mountain. An excellent way to relax in the often busy V&A. More details are on their website

The picture also reminds me that I need to visit the Da Vinci exhibition before it closes.
The Sedov arrives in Cape Town for the first time in 77 years, and I just happened to be in the V&A Waterfront today to get some shots.
And here is some detail of the rigging, imagine having to untangle that lot.
Lois and I have been Lush fans for years, and often our travel plans usually include finding the local Lush shop (to be precise we have been to about 8 different shops in 6 countries). Since they opened a shop in the V&A Waterfront Cape Town, we no longer need to worry about our luggage being overweight on our return travels.
While Lush is mainly a shop for the girls, it is a sensory experience. Their products are such a refreshing change to the usual bland supermarket soaps. The shop in Cape Town has been open for about 4 months now, and it lives up to the usual “Lush experience”. The staff are friendly, knowledgable, passionate about the brand, and really to assist.
A couple of weeks ago, Lois and I were invited to the launch of their new Gorilla range of perfumes. In typical Lush style, it was a wacky evening. Some of the helpers were a hippy, a gorilla, a cook, death, and a faery, all running around demonstrating the scents. And while I am anything from a perfume expert, they have some unusual scents with interesting names, such as “The Sun”, “Euphoria” (my favourite), and the “Devil’s Nightcap”.
So if you have not been down to Lush, go and check it out. I promise you won’t be disappointed, it is quite an experience.
By the way, Lush are very strict about animal test, organic products, and they even have some vegetarian and vegan products as well.

I think that everybody in Cape Town has taken a shot of the Coke Man, and here is my contribution. He was born during the 2010 Soccer world cup, and has been here ever since. His name is Elliot, and he is made from over 2500 coke creates. I can’t tell you much more about him, aside to mention that he seems to have a few brothers scanned around the world, but there is very little official online (at least that I can find).
The medals are that he is wearing are celebrating wins from the SA Olympic team., and you can visit him anytime at the V&A Waterfront (you can’t miss him).
In Sep 2010, I posted about the Ferris Wheel in the Waterfront. At the time, it was scheduled to be there for a total of 6 months, but almost 2 years later it is still there (it has however been moved to the middle of the tourist area, which is probably a good think).
Anyway, I confess that I still have not got around to visiting it, but I will soon, I promise!
The Clock Tower in Cape Town was completed in 1882, and is the gateway to Robin Island. It is a lovely old building which has been beautifully restored.
I just got back from speaking that the Wordcamp Cape Town conference, and it was an awesome experience. There is so much technical talent in South Africa, and some amazing work being done. It was invigorating and exciting to meet so many amazing WordPess evangelists. I have also never seen so many iPads and Mac’s in one place in my life. I did feel a little strange using my PC laptop for my presentation :-)
The conference was the Atlantic Imbizo, V&A Waterfront, which is on the top floor of the shopping centre, offering amazing views of the waterfront and the harbour. Of course I managed to get in a shot or two, so I hope you enjoy these two of the fishing boats, taken from the roof of the building.

This giant 50m Ferris wheel has been at the entrance to the Waterfront since the beginning of June.
According the website, “the giant observation wheel, a first for Cape Town and South Africa, is a unique way to savour panoramic bird’s-eye views of Cape Town, Paarl, Table Mountain and Robben Island. Sporting 36 fully-enclosed cabins, friends and family can sit back and savour the city skyline on the 15 minute round trip”
I have not managed to visit it yet (it only opens at 11am), but I am looking forward to my visit. Ticket prices are R70 per person, and R40 for children, so I don’t think that it is too bad.
You can also hire the luxary private cabin, but they decline to give prices for that on their website!
They promise it will be here for at least 6 months, so I suspect that it will move somewhere else directly after the Christmas season.
