Budapest is full of running paths, there is one in almost every park. And with a 5km track, Margaret Island is no exception. Margaret Island is a lovely little haven of piece and quite in the middle of the Danube, sheltering you from the somewhat chaotic city. So of course I had to go for a run. By the way, the track would make a perfect parkrun, just saying!

If you’re not a runner its still a lovely place to visit either for a picnic or just a stroll around the island.

This track goes all the way around the island. Directions – stick to the track and run for 5km. You will get you back to where you started.

This water tower is in the middle of the island. It is over 100 years old and just short of 60m tall.

Saint Margaret’s grave in the middle of the island. She lived in the 1200’s, and lived as a nun on the island since she was 3 years old. She was canonised by the Roman Catholic Church in 1943, and reputedly performed miracles both during her life and after her death.

Following on my last post, here is a view of the little down harbour, another peaceful place to enjoy a post-dinner walk. Looking towards the own you can see Fortress Palamidi, the Venetia-build fortress up on the hill, and if you turn around you cans the venetian fortress of Bourtzi Castle, another Venetian-built fortress. It is such a lovely place to spend a few days.

Travel

Park Island is a small island on the Zandvlei, the vlei (lake) at the bottom of my road. The only way to access the island is from a walkway on the other side of the vlei, and while I have paddled around it in my kayak many times, I have never been on the island. This changed last weekend, when I had to do a recon on the island (to look at a possible site for a memorial bench for a friend), so while I was there I took Eccles for a walk.

Labyrinth

To my utter surprise I found a labyrinth on the island, just 600m from my house (in a direct line – about 3km if I take the road). It was only created last year, and in the dry weather it has been struggling to get established, but I’m sure that it will be wonderful once it gets more established and teh paths become more clear. Watch this space for an update…
